Plan on Senior Support

I plan to reduce municipal property taxes by 5% for seniors 65 years and older. As a result, our senior population can be financially stable to take care of themselves. We'll review the strategy later to see if we can raise the proportion supporting the seniors.

Senior Plan
  • I plan to reduce municipal property taxes by 5% for seniors 65 years and older. As a result, our senior population can be financially stable to take care of themselves. We'll review the strategy later to see if we can raise the proportion supporting the seniors.

  • Also, to help seniors, college and university students, I will establish Winnipeg Home Sharing in collaboration with an agency. The Winnipeg Home Sharing program will pair elderly people who want to share a spare room with college and university students looking for cheap housing. The student contributes up to 6 hours of light domestic chores, such as cooking, cleaning up after oneself, and transporting groceries, etc., in exchange for reduced rent of $200-400 per month.

  • The agency coordinating the Winnipeg Home Sharing will also manage people willing to volunteer to support seniors in care homes. The agency will also collaborate with the care homes to determine senior needs and assign volunteers to support them.

  • I will shorten the call wait times for Winnipeg Transit Plus and Handi-Transit.

  • I will make sure snow sidewalks are quickly cleared so wheelchair users and seniors can easily access them. In addition, I will encourage more accessible paths for wheelchairs all around the city.

  • As mayor, I will dialogue with the seniors quarterly and look into their concerns.
